The California State Sheriffs' Association named Assemblywoman Norma Torres, D-Ontario, Outstanding Legislator of the Year.
San Bernardino Sheriff-Coroner Rod Hoops presented the award Thursday on behalf of the association during a briefing in San Bernardino.
"In her very first year in the legislature, Assembly member Torres proved to be a strong advocate for public safety and friend of law enforcement," Hoops said in a statement released by Torres' office.
"Her leadership and commitment to introduce and pass legislation to improve the 9-1-1 emergency system along with her open line of communication with law enforcement during tough state budget negotiations are deeply appreciated by sheriffs across the state," Hoops said.
Last year Torres introduced legislation that was approved that will make improvements to the 9-1-1 system. Her legislation is expected to lead to improvements in equipment, staffing, recruitment and training of dispatchers.
"I have dedicated most of my professional career and all of my years in elective office fighting for the safety of our families and children. It is with much appreciation that I receive this recognition from the State Sheriffs' Association," Torres said in the statement.
